The Right Steps for Taking Your Dog Camping

Australian Silky Terrier in a Camper

Summer is the perfect time to take a restful (or adventurous!) camping trip with the whole family or a group of friends. And of course, unlike some other trips you might take in resorts or hotels, dogs are the perfect companions to take along when you camp.

Still, when it comes to dogs and camping, there are certain steps you should take to ensure the safety and well-being of your pet.

Step 1: Find a dog-friendly camping site.

Remember that not all camping sites are dog-friendly. Do your research to ensure you find a site that allows and welcomes dogs! Take a look at our list of dog-friendly state parks and trails if you need recommendations.

Step 2: Create a packing list just for your dog.

Depending on where you’ll be and what you’ll be doing, here’s a list of dog essentials you should probably bring with you:

  • Dog-designated water bottle
  • Dog food
  • Waste pick-up bags
  • Reflective dog collar and leash
  • Clip-on collar flashing light
  • Collapsible food and water bowls
  • Dog sleeping mat

Step 3: Be prepared for emergencies

In addition to the essentials above, you should also bring the following items in case of emergencies:

  • A first-aid book for emergency dog treatments
  • Contact information for the closest vet clinic
  • Tweezers and alcohol for emergency tick, thorn, or porcupine quill removal
  • Paw booties in case you’ll be traversing sharp or hot terrain

Step 4: Book a pre-camping vet visit.

Lastly, don’t forget to book a pre-camping visit with your local veterinarian to ensure that your canine friend is in good health and ready to explore the great outdoors alongside you and your family.

“It’s a good idea to make sure your pet is up to date on vaccines. Also, be sure to have your pet on a flea/tick preventive as well as a heartworm preventive since outdoor exposure means more bugs.” – Dr Beth Ruby, DVM

Our highly-qualified and experienced veterinarians at Sunset Veterinary Clinic would be happy to see your pet for a pre-camping check-up. We’ll go over their medical history and take a look at their physical health to make sure you won’t experience safety issues on your trip.
