Pets need dental care too!

Dental disease is the most common health problem for pets. By the age of 3 approximately 80% of dogs and 75% of cats have some degree of periodontal disease.

If left untreated periodontal disease can lead to tooth decay or tooth loss. In addition dental disease can result in the showering of bacteria throughout the body. This situation can eventually cause kidney, liver or even heart disease.

You can help prevent dental disease in your loved one’s mouth by following a few basic steps:

1.  Start by brushing your pet’s teeth at home. The outer surfaces of their teeth are the most important to brush. You can start with a wash cloth and dog/cat formulated tooth paste. Once your pet becomes accustomed to brushing, you can move on to using a pet toothbrush or finger brush.

2.  You can offer your pet a veterinary approved “chewies” or treats which promote removal of plaque.

3.  Feeding a dry food diet is helpful.  The crunching of dry food helps remove plaque.

4.  Using a veterinarian approved water additive to help keep your pets teeth clean and breath fresh is a good way to top off your at home dental care regime. Please never use human products for dental care on your furry friends’ teeth.

5.  Make certain your furry friend receives their annual wellness exam. At Sunset Veterinary Clinic, your pet’s annual exam includes a dental assessment. If we see any dental disease that needs to be addressed we may recommend a dental scaling/cleaning. Pets won’t hold still during a teeth cleaning so general anesthesia will be required.

In the end, we want to help you keep your pet happy and healthy for as long as possible. Good dental health is a crucial part of a healthy body.
